Things you need to know about the Start-up Visa (SUV) Program

    • The SUV program targets immigrant entrepreneurs with the ability to establish innovative businesses in Canada that can compete on a global scale.
    • Successful applicants and their family members receive permanent residence in Canada.
    • Permanent residence visa processing time is 12-18 months. A work permit may be issued to go to Canada to start the business while the permanent residence visa is processing.
    • Applicants can settle anywhere in Canada except the province of Quebec.
    • There is minimum investment required in the SUV program. A permanent resident visa is issued before investment is made in the business.
    • Previous business ownership or management experience is not required
    • There is no minimum education required in order to be eligible for the SUV program
    • No age limits apply to the SUV program.
    • Up to 5 applicants can apply together as a group to the SUV program. Each applicant and their family members will receive Canadian permanent residence
    • You obtain your permanent residence before you start your business in Canada and your permanent residence in unconditional and does not depend on the success of your proposed business.
    • There is no need to show a minimum net worth or source of funds

Startup Visa Eligibility

Letter of Support

In order to apply to the Start-up Visa Program you must have a letter of support from a designated organization. A designated organization can be either a venture capital fund, angel investor group or business incubator.

Language Requirements

To apply for a start-up visa, you must show that you have reached Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 5 in listening, reading, writing and speaking. This equates to listening 5, reading 4, writing 5 and speaking 5 on the IELTS general training test.

Business Ownership

To meet the ownership requirements:

Each applicant must hold at least 10% of the voting rights in the business and
The designated organization and the applicants must jointly hold more than 50% of the voting rights in the business

Security and Medical Clearance

As with all Canadian immigration programs, the applicant and accompanying family members must undergo a security clearance and a medical examination

Business Management

The applicant must operate and manage the business venture once set up from within Canada

Sufficient Settlement Funds

The applicant must have sufficient settlement funds to support themselves and their family once they immigrate to Canada. Required settlement funds are as follows:
